Casa della Trota
Casa della Trota, or Hotel Ponale, is a legendary abandoned cliffside restaurant and hotel built directly into the sheer rocks of Lake Garda, Italy. The venue earned its name by serving fresh lake trout to travelers, eventually welcoming notable historical figures like Franz Joseph I of Austria.
Trota’s origins date back centuries, beginning as a 17th-century tavern that grew alongside the historic Strada del Ponale. The property experienced its golden era during the 1960s and 1970s. It was transformed into a luxury hotel and panoramic restaurant, featuring dining rooms with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that hung dramatically over the water. However, the very geography that made it breathtaking ultimately caused its downfall.
The site is located right at the mouth of a dark, narrow vehicle tunnel on the Gardesana highway. With virtually no parking and a highly dangerous entrance for cars, it became a logistical nightmare. We also became aware of this problem while visiting the hotel. We parked our car near the hotel and walked on the side of the dark tunnel while cars and motorcycles drove past us. There is little room to dodge on the curved and gloomy tunnel.
Due to the challenging location, the hotel closed its doors and was left completely abandoned. For decades, it has stood as a ghost building, slowly succumbing to decay, graffiti, and nature, while becoming a spot for urban explorers and drone photographers.
The era of the ruin is coming to an end, since the Province of Trento has bought the site for 2.3 million euros. Due to structural degradation and safety hazards, a full demolition plan has been launched. The site is being cleared to make way for the Ciclovia del Garda, an ambitious panoramic bicycle path, and to reconnect the area's famous hiking trails to the lake shore, transforming a symbol of modern decay back into a public natural landmark.
